The main bedroom in Caroline and Andrew Yeandle’s 1920s home in south London was one of the features which prompted them to buy the house. It was a roomy 6m by 3m (20ft by 10ft), with the bedroom running from the front to the back of the house and with a large window at each end. Now it’s just a little smaller but with one big bonus – an en-suite shower room.

‘As soon as I saw the bedroom, I was working out how I could fit a bathroom into it’ say Caroline. ‘The fact that the room had a big window at both ends made it ideal’. By stealing a little more than 2 sq m of space, the Yeadles managed to create a luxurious shower room, big enough to include a toilet, hand basin and power shower.

The larger window overlooking the back garden  Caroline’s and Andrews new bedroom looking really stylish given the shower room plenty of natural light – and the bedroom still benefits, too. ‘We definitely didn’t want a bathroom without a window, but we also didn’t want to lose the light that the double aspect gave the bedroom.’ says Caroline. As a compromise, they build a high-level window into the partition wall so natural light still finds it’s way into the bedroom from that end.

With the building work complete, Caroline had definite ideas about the decoration for the new rooms. ‘I desperately wanted an elegant fitted bedroom, but hand-built and therefore individual’, she says. ‘A Welsh carpenter had done some excellent work in our previous home and I just knew he would be ideal.’

Caroline found inspiration for the furniture by looking at features about readers’ bedroom in Ideal Home. ‘I gave Paul Sankala, the carpenter, a collection of cuttings with my ideas’, she says. ‘I wanted two wall of fitted cupboards-one wall for all our clothes and the opposite wall for the bed, beside cabinets and overhead cupboards.’

It took the Yeandles several months before they finalised a design and then Paul, using MDF, built and installed it exactly to their requirements. Caroline and Andrew then lived with it unpainted for nearly a year before they chose a colour scheme.

Caroline’s and Andrews new bedroom looking really stylish ‘I love bright shades and really wanted to have tangerine orange and lime green in the room’ Caroline explains ‘but Andrew and Paul were both sceptical about having a loud colour on the furniture.’

Instead she chose a combination of white and cream for the cupboards and left the brighter colours for the walls and curtains.

‘Now I couldn’t be happier with my bedroom, I have all the storage I will ever need to bed linin and towels etc, and the fit is perfect. I love going to sleep and waking up in my special bedroom.’
